The Monarch Club – Middle School (ages 11-15)
It is specifically designed for those “middle school challenges” that every child encounters. Middle School years are extremely emotional and vital as the teen begins to develop his true self. Lifelong friendships are often formed in middle school. However, many children become socially isolated in middle school as well. Our group provides individuals with the next level of social skills in alignment with their unique challenges and developmental needs. We focus heavily on learning to work together as part of a group, predicting outcomes, and thinking of others to build perspective taking and empathy.
Group activities to enhance teamwork and creative problem-solving abilities.
Communication practice using engaging props to improve presentation skills, including nonverbal cues, vocal variety, audience interaction, topic management, and turn-taking.
Fair play lessons through games that boost cognitive functions like strategizing, task organization, and goal completion.
The Monarch Club – High School (ages 15-17)
Focus is on using social skills in life situations. High school tends to be the time most children “find themselves” and are aware of who they are and what they want. However, some children with social communication challenges can find high school extremely difficult to navigate. Social groups of “like” interests are evident and most children fit into one specific group. If a child does not feel like they “belong” to a group, they may become isolated. In addition, they may not know “how” to fit into a similar group of peers. Much of this group targets life skills and prevocational/vocation tasks. For example, personal relationships/dating, being part of a community and learning to collaborate with peers/coworkers on a project or in a vocational setting.
Vocational tasks.
Team building to develop problem solving and collaboration.
Public speaking skills using high-interest props to develop eye contact, the tone of voice, body language, answering and asking questions, maintaining a topic, turn taking, etc.
Activities that engage executive functioning skills such as planning, organizing, and follow through.
Monarch Club
Why should I enroll my child in a social skills group?
The Monarch Club has helped kids build social and language skills needed for success in school and social settings. As these children get older, they often need ongoing support with new challenges like jobs, relationships, and becoming independent, confident young adults.
What do you work on in the social skills groups?
The Monarch Club offers the next level of social skills training to match each person's unique needs. We combine one-on-one and group therapy to provide focused help in a safe clinical and social setting. Each Monarch needs a screening before joining to place them in the right group and create a personal care plan.
Groups meet and cover topics like relationships, job skills, social skills, planning and organization, self-esteem, and more! We add individual sessions as needed to target specific concerns, talk about progress and challenges, and give the one-on-one feedback needed to get the most out of group time.
How long is a semester?
The groups meet once a week for an hour. Fall Semester is typically 12-14 weeks, Winter Semester is typically 12 weeks, Spring Semester is typically 10-12 weeks, and Summer Semester is typically 8-10 weeks.
Please Note:
We are NOT able to accommodate the following behaviors if they are not being addressed by a behavioral professional: elopement, hitting, kicking, biting, spitting, destruction of property, or harmful behaviors to self or others. We understand that these behaviors do impact social interactions, however before we can work on social communication the behaviors will need to be addressed BEFORE the child begins our program. We are happy to refer to a local behavioral specialist if the behaviors are not being currently addressed.
